From a metaphorical point of view, the muddy waters in which the lotus grows symbolize affection and carnal desires, and its flawless flower is the hope of salvation. Legend has it that when Buddha was born, he began to walk and a lotus flower appeared at every step.

The sacred lotus is also associated with longevity: seeds found in China's Liaoning province have sprouted after being dormant for over 1,300 years!
