Patchouli is a perennial shrub tropical plant of the Pogostemon genus. Their leaves have a strong and attractive aroma: that is why they have been used in the culture of incense for more than one century. Patchouli is native to Asia, namely the Philippines, but now this plant is also found in West Africa and South America.
The name 'patchouli' comes from the Tamil words: patchai, which means 'green', and ellai - 'leaf'. For the first time, this plant came from the East to Europe thanks to the famous conqueror Napoleon Bonaparte. From Egypt, he brought to France several cashmere shawls that smelled of patchouli oil. At that time, it was used to repel insects, and the origin of the smell itself was kept in strict secrecy. Oriental fabrics quickly gained popularity in Europe and began to be copied by local craftsmen, but they still had to bring the patchouli scent from the East. However, in 1837, the famous Spanish monk and botanist Francisco Manuel Blanco, who studied the nature of the Philippines, revealed the secret of a mysterious plant.
The peak of fame of the patchouli fragrance in Europe and America fell on the 60s and 70s of the 20th century. It was the favorite scent of hippies, who used the oil and incense of this plant extensively.
The aroma of patchouli oil is highly influenced by the cultivation methods, the harvesting time of the leaves, the drying and distillation processes and methods. To obtain the highest quality aroma, use only 3-4 main pairs of mature leaves, where the highest concentration of oil. They are dried in a special way and oil is obtained by steam distillation. This is a laborious and responsible process that directly depends on the manufacturer, who carefully controls all stages. The quality oil has a rich dark green hue and a rich, musky-earthy scent with a woody undertone.
In Japanese incense, patchouli is often used as an additive, but in its pure form it is of course great too.
